Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island
aka The Rock
The federal prison that operated from 1934 to 1966, but was built in 1910 as a U.S. military prison. Thought to be inescapable because it was in the middle of San Francisco Bay a mile offshore with cold water and strong currents.
Guard tower Typical cell The fake wall in one of the cells used by Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin during their escape attempt.
The escape attempt was made famous by the movie Escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood. Watch it, it's good. Papier-mache head used to buy time once the started to escape. The hair was real hair stolen from the barbershop. The raft that the three made was found on Angel Island, but officially they have been declared dead in the attempt to reach the mainland. Rumors that they actually survived and made it to South America still live on.
The utility corridor behind the cells that the three men tunneled into, and then made their way to the outside from there. Broadway, the central corridor The upper levels of Broadway
Recreation yard View of the Golden Gate Bridge from the rec yard That's what you would have to swim across to escape. Water is 50-55 degrees F.
D-Block, which included the solitary confinement cells The gun gallery that six prisoners were able to gain access to (apparently one of them starved himself to get thin in combination with bar spreaders to be able to get through the bars). They never made it out of the prison though, and instead holed up to begin the Battle of Alcatraz. D-Block
Battle damage from the Battle of Alcatraz, where U.S. Marines were called in to retake the prison. Two guards that were being held as hostages were executed during the escape attempt. Guard tower Exterior staircase
