Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), one of the seven wonders of the world |
The crowds at the top, which really weren't that bad given what I've seen from other photos |
Cristo's face |
Construction took place between 1922 and 1931, and the entire statue is made from reinforced concrete with an outer layer of soapstone |
Statue itself is 98 ft tall (which doesn't include the pedestal it sits on which adds another 26 ft) |
The rear of the statue |
At the time, it cost $250,000 USD to build, which translates to $3.3 million today. |
Now the iconic symbol of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil |
It's very cool, but something built in the 20th century specifically to serve as a tourist attraction knocking the Pyramids of Giza off the list of the seven wonders of the world? Bullshit. |

The Corcovado tram that takes you up to the top. You can also grab a minivan direct from Copacabana Beach to the top of Corcovado, which is cheaper. |

It's probably not often you see every single camera pointed away from the statue |
He would be the reason why... |
Trying to catch the wind |
He ended up aborting twice when wind conditions weren't right. Then I left, so I don't know if he actually took the plunge. Looked like he was officially packing up as I was leaving though. |
This is the photo you get when you sleep in and take the 1pm tram up to the top. So on a free morning I took a 9am minivan up from Copacabana, which resulted in all the decent photos on this page. |

Maracana Stadium I got the time of the match wrong on the Saturday I was going to go, so I never saw a match there. Reason to go back. |

Not too crowded in the morning, but that changes quick. This was maybe 9:30 or 10am on a weekday. |

"Hey man, would you mind taking a photo of me?" |
Second take, when I managed to give the camera to someone who didn't have their head up their ass |
